The American Legion Essay Contest: A Reflection by Fortville Elementary 4th Graders
The American Legion Essay Contest offers a distinctive opportunity for young students, including the fourth graders at Fortville Elementary School, to reflect on and express their emotions about a symbol that holds profound significance for millions of Americans—the American flag.
The essays submitted by these young writers are unique because they combine both personal reflections and historical context. Ron Patterson, American Legion District Commander, states "I’m truly impressed by how these fourth graders are able to articulate their thoughts on the American flag and make such meaningful connections at such a young age.” Through their essays, the students often demonstrate an impressive understanding of the legacy of the United States and its military.
Fourth-grade teacher, Lydgia Palmer, stated “We hope that not only our students working on their writing skills during this essay contest, but that they are reflecting on what they learned about the American Flag and then sharing that with others in the community.”
Once the students submit their essays, a boy and a girl winner are selected from each classroom. These winners receive a $25 reward as a token of their accomplishment. From there, the overall boy and girl winners are chosen from all entries, earning a grand prize of $50 and an exciting pizza party with their families. During this party, the winners read their essays aloud to their guests, sharing the heartfelt reflections they’ve crafted. The overall winners then have the opportunity to compete at the state level, representing their school and continuing their journey in the contest. This multi-tiered process not only celebrates the students’ writing but also encourages a sense of community and pride in their work.
In conclusion, the essays written by the fourth graders at Fortville Elementary School showcase the heart and spirit of the next generation. Through their words, they have expressed pride in their country and appreciation for the values that the American flag represents. It is clear that these young students have not only learned about history and symbols, but also about the power of unity, patriotism, and civil responsibility.
