Mt. Vernon High School Earns 2026 Best Communities for Music Education Award

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is proud to announce that Mt. Vernon High School's music program has been named a recipient of the 2026 Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) Award by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. This prestigious national recognition highlights schools and districts that demonstrate exceptional achievement, commitment, and support for comprehensive music education programs, including both choir and band at Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS).
MVHS was one of only three high schools in Indiana to receive this prestigious award, along with 17 other school districts in Indiana. In 2026, just over 1,000 schools and districts nationwide earned this distinction, placing Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) among an elite group of educational communities dedicated to the arts.
Now in its 27th year, the BCME program continues to spotlight outstanding K–12 institutions across the United States that prioritize access to high-quality music learning experiences. The award not only celebrates excellence but also helps build momentum for continued investment and growth in school music programs.
“Receiving this award is incredibly exciting for our school and our students. It highlights, on a national level, how important music is to the entire Mt. Vernon community, as well as across all of our schools and throughout the district,” shared Director of Bands, Dr. Kathryn Spangler. “Music education is valued as a part of our curriculum, and here at the high school, we really see and feel that.”
Recipients of the BCME Award are selected through a rigorous and data-driven application process. Schools and districts are evaluated on critical factors such as funding, instructional time, student participation, facilities, and community engagement. To ensure integrity and accuracy, all submissions are independently reviewed and verified by WolfBrown, a nationally recognized leader in arts and education research.
“It’s really great how much Mt. Vernon has dedicated support for the arts, from Kindergarten through 12th grade,” Spangler added. “I tell the kids and parents all the time, support comes in a lot of different ways. It’s not just financial support but also support from administrators and the district as a whole. The flexibility that Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Ahearn, our percussion instructor, and I have to be able to meet the needs of our students doesn't happen everywhere; Mt. Vernon is a special place where students can truly grow and excel in the arts.”
This honor reflects the dedication, talent, and collaborative spirit of MVHS’s students, educators, and supporters. MVCSC proudly celebrates its continued success and unwavering commitment to excellence in music education. Their achievements exemplify the district’s mission to engage, inspire, and empower every student to grow, succeed, and thrive.
