8th Grade Defies Gravity and "Walks on Water"
Mt. Vernon Middle School students recently dove into an engineering challenge named the "Walk on Water" (WOW) project. This hands-on initiative combined creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills as students designed and built devices to help one team member walk across a pool.
The WOW project kicked off six weeks before the big day, allowing students time to brainstorm and think of ideas. The process began with individual work, as each student designed and constructed a small prototype. These prototypes were presented to their peers, offering each student a chance to pitch their concept and influence their team's final design.
After sharing ideas, students formed teams of four or five. As a group, they decided on a final design, often merging elements from several prototypes. While planning meetings were held during school hours, construction had to happen outside of school, encouraging collaboration and effective time management. With no opportunity to test their floats prior to competition day, teams relied on careful planning and the strength of their designs.
On competition day, students gathered around the pool to see if their hard work would pay off. One by one, teams attempted to cross the water, with each participant using their team's device. The rules were simple but high stakes: if a float sank, the team was eliminated. Some designs performed beautifully, with students gliding or stepping confidently across the water. Others, however, quickly sank.
Three awards were given to each of the three academic teams, All-Stars, Pride, and Eagles. First place was given to the group that was able to travel the farthest distance in the water. Second place was the group that had the best representation of the engineering design. Lastly, third place went to the group with the best theme. Many groups get in the spirit and dress in a theme that represents their group. This year, teams were dressed as Mario Brothers characters, Carebears, Minions, and Ninja Turtles, among others.
The WOW project exemplified the spirit of teamwork and resilience, proving that sometimes, the journey and the effort to "walk on water” is as rewarding as the destination. The Mt. Vernon Middle School WOW project is sure to remain a highlight of the year, inspiring students to think big, collaborate effectively, and embrace challenges head-on, which are all skills that will benefit them in their bright futures.
